VITAMIN D deficiency symptoms include weight gain, fatigue and a low mood, but few people are aware they have it. The condition occurs when people don't eat enough fresh foods, leading to an inadequate vitamin intake. As many as one in five adults and one in six children in the UK do not get enough of this vitamin, according to the National Institute for Healthcare and Excellence (NICE). This may be due to their lifestyle and diet. Staying indoors and a focus on processed foods could also be a factor.

"Vitamins and minerals are nutrients your body needs in small amounts to work properly and stay healthy," says the NHS on its website.

"Most people should get all the nutrients they need by having a varied and balanced diet, although a few people may need to take extra supplements."

Sources of vitamins include milk, butter, fish and chicken. However, some are acquired just by going outside.

Health experts always advise us to go outside and exercise more often. A five-year study by the Centre for Health Research in Oregon, America, has shown a link between not going outside and having a deficiency of this vitamin.

"Studies have shown that vitamin D isn't beneficial in weight loss, unless it is given to those who are very low calcium consumers," said Dr Alexandra Phelan, GP and member of the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor Service team.

"However, a vitamin D deficiency has been linked to weight gain, so even though taking more won't help you lose weight getting less vitamin D than you need could make you gain weight."

The Oregon-based study found that women with lower levels of this vitamin were "prone" to weight gain, compared to women with higher levels.

Measuring the weight and vitamin D level of more than 4,000 women aged over 65, they found that women with inadequate levels of this vitamin gained more weight.

You can check if you have the deficiency by taking a blood test, said Shona Wilkinson, a nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.

"This will give you a measure of your Vitamin D levels," she explains.

You can raise your vitamin D levels by eating more oily fish, such as salmon, sardines, or herring, red meat, liver and egg yolks, according to the NHS Choices website.

The Department of Health recommends consuming a supplement of 10mcg of vitamin D a day if you are not usually outdoors.

This includes people that aren't often outside, are in care homes or wear clothes that cover most of the skin when outside, the Department said.

It also mentioned that people with dark skin from African, African-Caribbean and south Asian backgrounds should consider taking the supplement, as they may not get adequate amounts of vitamin D.

A deficiency of this vitamin is less likely to occur during the summer, because of sunlight, according to NHS Choices.

"From about late March/early April to the end of September, the majority of people should be able to get all the vitamin D they need from sunlight on their skin," its website explains.

Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to bone deformities, as the vitamin is essential in regulating calcium and phosphorus in the body, which assist in bone development.

"Too little (and indeed too much) vitamin D can lead to weakness of the bones and the development of conditions such as osteoporosis (brittle bones) and rickets (soft bones)."
